Featured Distillery: Dry Fly

November 30, 2015 Kurt DeLashmet

Owned and operated by Don Poffenroth and Kent Fleischmann, Dry Fly Distilling is a true craft distillery located in the heart of Spokane, Washington - the first distillery in the state since Prohibition!

Dry Fly produces award-winning vodka, gin, whiskies, and bourbon using only locally grown grains and botanicals. Dry Fly embraces the "farm to bottle" approach, producing every drop of liquor it sells from only raw materials, grown locally by sustainable farms. Not surprisingly, Dry Fly was recently chosen as one of the top ten distilleries poised to make waves over the next decade.

Check out the video below to see how the magic is made:

Dry Fly is a distillery in Spokane, WA. In 2007 it started operation, the first in the state in almost 75 years. I dropped by on a Saturday and got the grand tour while some volunteers bottled their award winning vodka. Directed, shot, produced, and edited by Matt Slotemaker

Here are some of the excellent Dry Fly products that De Nux is proud to bring to Arkansas:

Dry Fly Gin

This excellent concoction uses Dry Fly Vodka as a base, and then adds a blend of of juniper, coriander, lavender, mint, dried Fuji apples, and even hops - which is something that no one else we know of has attempted!

SpiritsReview.com raves that this "top notch gin" is "different enough that even gin haters will like it and just familiar enough for gin lovers to embrace it as a new beginning in gin adventures."

Awarded a gold medal at the 2015 San Diego Spirits Festival, and was selected by Best Gin Brands for its November 2015 best gin picks!

Dry Fly Vodka

A true classic, microdistilled in small batches from a locally sourced wheat in Washington State. It's both pot- and column-distilled, and fresh mountain water is used to cut it to 80-proof.

This vodka boasts a flawless purity as clean as rainwater. Features bright aromas of pastry and buttercream with a satiny, dry-yet-fruity, medium to full body and honey gelato finish.

Dry Fly Washington Wheat Whiskey

The reviews are in, and this whiskey is a winner!

"On the palate, neat, this whiskey was very soft, almost like a baby's blanket caressing my tongue, with freshly baked orange scones, cinnamon toast, white pepper and peppermint notes." (Lance Mayhew, Oregon Culinary Institute)

"A really, really lovely whiskey which will work well as a sipper and in a cocktail." (Joel from Whiskey Magazine)

"A completely different whiskey from the usual." (Spirits Review)

The November 2015 issue of Whiskey Magazine gives this special whiskey 18/20, plus a silver medal in the Whiskies of the World Awards!

Dry Fly Straight Triticale Whiskey

Triticale is a hybrid of wheat and rye grains developed in Scotland in the late 1800s. Dry Fly Straight Triticale Whiskey was named "Highly Recommended" and given a score of 92/100 by the Ultimate Beverage Challenge 2015. It also received a gold medal from the 2015 San Diego Spirits Festival!

"This regal whiskey lures you in with aromatics of caramel covered peaches, seaweed, sandalwood, and fresh pineapple. On the palate, round, Sauternes-like sensuousness and endless aftertaste of pineapple, Anjou pears, raisin toast, salted pretzels, and sweet figs take you 'round and 'round. You don't want to get off this ride. 94/100." (Meredith May, Publisher of The Tasting Panel)
